Born in New York City, Wendy Hendelman doesn’t just sculpt stone – she listens to it.
For more than 25 years, Hendelman has been in dialogue with marble, alabaster, and limestone, coaxing from their silent depths the quiet rhythms of the human spirit. Her earliest sculptures—raw yet intuitive—caught the eye of discerning mentors and led her to an apprenticeship with legendary sculptor Chaim Gross, who taught her to see tools not as instruments of force, but as extensions of intention.
From there, her journey became a pilgrimage. Residencies with Andrea Grassi and Jose De Creeft, and a formative stretch at Italy’s stone-carving haven Pietrasanta, gave her fluency in the ancient language of sculpture. Her works have since found homes in galleries across New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Sydney, though her pieces seem to transcend geography—anchored instead in something timeless and elemental.
Perhaps the clearest expression of Hendelman’s vision is her “Tribes” collection: 99 stone sculptures that celebrate the shared breath of a diverse human family. Each piece stands as both witness and vessel—carved, yes, but never silenced.
In Hendelman’s hands, stone remembers. And it speaks.
